I have been lured back to the desert southwest since first traveling through the region in 1969. I had read Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire, and wanted to see the fiercely wild places he wrote about in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. I was entranced. Since then I have returned dozens of times and even wrote and illustrated a book about the wildflowers of the region, "Plants of the Virgin Mountains," that has been in print for over 40 years. I never tire of exploring the slickrock landscapes, with their twisted Joshua Trees and ancient petroglyphs.
