NOT CRESTFALLEN
Steller’s Jays are frequent visitors to my Olympic Peninsula home, mostly because I feed them peanuts. They are a hoot to watch when they eat the whole peanuts, because a jay might pick up and set down half a dozen peanuts in an effort to decide which was the best deal (much like when I’m shopping for a head of lettuce, I’ll pick the biggest head for the money). Sometimes a jay will have second thoughts and bring back a stored peanut later to see about exchanging it for a bigger one. Some jays even mimic the predatory screech of a Red-tailed Hawk–perhaps to scare other birds away from the area. As I said, watching these birds is a hoot!
