MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP

Few people in the northern tier of states like driving in a snowstorm, but at least the car keeps us in a bubble of warmth and entertainment during those long hours of black ice and blowing snow. The Amish, living closer to the land and weather, don’t have that luxury and are more likely to feel the sting of hard snow and bitter winds. That doesn’t keep them home though, and they have woolen blankets and heavy winter coats to deal with the elements.

I envy the Amish children in winter. With no digital screens glued to their faces, they have hours of time to play in the snow, making snow forts and sledding and snowball fights: all the activities I enjoyed as a boy.
