LINE AND WASH ON A WINTER DAY
Amish women hang their laundry out to dry no matter the season, but if the day is simply too cold and windy for cold hands, they use clothes lines on their front porches. In this photograph I love how the rhythmic line of clothes echoes the lines of the balustrades and gingerbread of the house.
Just when we thought the Amish never embrace new technologies, we observed a new trend catching on at many of the local Amish homes. They have started using a long, pulley-driven clothesline that can be operated from a window in the house, so that the women don’t have to go outside in the freezing cold. Now that’s progress!
