CAFE ON THE LINCOLN HIGHWAY
Stepping back in time along the Lincoln Highway, we stopped at Niland’s Cafe for lunch. Inside, the unassuming place had red formica tables with metal edges and a black-and-white checkered floor, placing its decor somewhere back in the 1940s and 1950s. I ordered a cup of coffee, of course, and also one of Iowa’s classic pork tenderloin sandwiches, which are made from butterflied and pounded pork chops, then breaded and pan-fried: wonderful to behold and eat.
For this picture I simply wanted to capture the essence of the cafe experience, which is a form of time travel. I focused on the cup and let the background go dreamily out-of-focus.
