INTROSPECTION
The leaves of young American Beeches hang on the trees through the long winter. They are pale and bleached of all the chlorophyll and other compounds that make green leaves the foundation of forest ecosystems, so they remain as pale ghosts of their summer selves.
I photographed these trees in a light fog, and love the pattern of leaves and trunks that invites introspection, as the fecundity of summer gives was to the resting state of winter.
