TREE ISLAND
Hiking out from Grand Valley back to the trailhead in Olympic National Park, we walked through a couple of miles of alpine tundra studded with tree islands like this one. These are places of refuge for grouse and other wildlife in a land of harsh extremes.
The first time I hiked this trail was on a midsummer day when it was snowing at the trailhead. Believe me it was hard to get out of the car that day to start the hike and, by the time we got to camp I had a mild case of hypothermia.
