IN THE RAINFOREST
The most stunning Pacific Ocean vista in Washington State is on the Makah Reservation, where a trail leads to a series of overlooks. From each viewpoint we see the high cliffs and sea caves and coves, as well as Tatoosh Island in the distance. Seabirds are nesting and calling; waves are constantly crashing; and the scent of sea and spruce hangs in the air. Heavenly. Once we even saw a Gray Whale mother and her calf pass right under us along the cliffs.
The trail itself is also beautiful, made of cedar that sounds like distant drums when we walk across it. It winds through the forest gracefully and I find the journey on the trail an important part of the experience.
