PIKE PLACE MARKET ON A WINTER MORNING
Drizzly Seattle doesn’t get much snow–usually only a few inches each winter. When a big snowstorm hit, I dressed warmly, grabbed my camera, then crossed Puget Sound on a ferry to get in a day’s shooting with winter as the subject. I walked everywhere downtown, seeing the Space Needle and the monorail with flakes falling all around. There were intrepid cross-country skiers propelling themselves to work along 1st Avenue; buses sliding crossways down the steep hills, and people making snowmen along the waterfront. It was magically unusual for this city!
Pike Place Market is a favorite destination in Seattle for residents and tourists alike, with its salmon tosses, guitarists, gum wall (don’t ask!), and great selection of fresh produce and flowers in season. On this snowy day, I was one of the very few people around, and I loved the look of the giant snowflakes falling everywhere.
