GNOME TARN AND PRUSIK PEAK
To hikers in Washington State, The Enchantments is widely considered the premier wilderness area, especially in autumn when the Alpine Larches have turned golden. My companions and I were fortunate to have won a lottery to get a permit to hike The Enchantments for a week in early October. It could not have been better, with cold temperatures, unsettled weather, and larches at peak color.
For this photograph, we hiked from our campsite up to Gnome Tarn, where we shivered for a couple of hours as we lay on the ground waiting for good light, since it was mostly overcast. Finally, we got it! Some breaks in the clouds with the sun illuminating Prusik Peak and scattered larches.
