MASTER OF THE HUNT
What could these scores of Desert Bighorn Sheep pecked into the sandstone wall mean? Was it a story about a great hunt, told through pictographs? Was it a shaman’s summoning of prey for his tribe? We will never know for sure, since this petroglyph was created perhaps a thousand years ago by the Fremont culture. They hunted and farmed this canyon, also taking the time to create thousands of inscriptions in the rock. We hunt for their meanings, but perhaps the gulf in time and traditions is simply too great. All we can do is appreciate the fine workmanship and sense of artistry it took to create this wonderful wall of animals.
