DAWN OVER CALIFORNIA

I was camping on Anacapa Island at the time when Western Gulls were establishing nest sites on the island. They were courting each other everywhere, even in our campsite and on our picnic table. On this morning we rose early and walked toward the Anacapa Lighthouse, where gulls wheeled and cried in the sky, and an apricot-colored California sunrise caused the Malibu Hills to glow in the golden light.
