Wild and free with a scent of sage

On one of my trips across the country, I photographed for an all-too-brief time in North Dakota's Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This wonderful piece of the old west, located along the Little Missouri River, is alive with bison, elk, pronghorns, prairie dogs, and wild horses.

Several bands of wild horses roamed the sagebrush prairie lands that flowed around the rock outcrops. It was early summer and the colts were still strongly attached to their mothers. The scent of sage and the rhythm of horses' hooves filled my senses.

By the way, Theodore Roosevelt ran two ranches here and in a brief time saw vast numbers of bison killed off by greedy market hunters. This fueled his passion for conservation action, and as a Republican president he created the national forest and national wildlife refuge systems. There are few of today's national "leaders" that I, an independent-minded photographer, highly respect. If only we could recreate T.R. from his DNA.
