TUMBLING STONES 8: Orbit

Much of the universe we know consists of stone. Iron, silicon, carbon, aluminum, and other elements combine into the rocks and planets we can relate to. What do we want to bring back from the Moon and from Mars? Rocks, of course. What else is there?

On my favorite Lake Superior beach, I tried arranging stones in fresh ways and this composition virtually arranged itself. The repetitive shapes and spiral path remind me of old classroom posters of the moon and planets in their orbits.

As with all my stone compositions, it is critical to keep the stones constantly wet to bring out the bright colors. The other challenge lies in getting the lighting, background, and composition just right. Therein lies the magic of photography.

Details:
The matting and framing on the linked sample is a close digital approximation of what the largest matted and framed "Tumbling Stones 8" actually looks like. The frame is a contemporary 1.5" wide American Black Walnut moulding, flat on the front surface, with an ebony finish that lets the wood grain show through. It is double-matted with museum quality white mats; the glass is Tru Vue AR, which nearly eliminates reflections while retaining crystal clarity. The smaller framed version uses a narrower profile metal frame the color of pencil graphite.
