| TUMBLING STONES 4: Granite Variations Granite signifies strength and longevity, so we use it for gravestones, monuments, and substantial architecture. In nature, granite creates some of the most sublime landscapes, such as California's Yosemite Valley and South Dakota's Black Hills, from which Mount Rushmore was carved. I found these granite pebbles on a remote shore of Lake Superior, where they had washed up after tumbling and polishing in the surf. Some might have come from offshore outcrops; others, gouged from ancient Canadian hills hundreds of miles distant, traveled to Lake Superior in glaciers. These stones have long stories to tell. Granite always consists of a matrix of several minerals, the balance of which lend color and grain that make each outcrop distinctive. In this photograph you get a sense of those variations.
