There is a remote beach along Lake Superior where I can work alone for hours, gathering and arranging stones as the light and surf constantly change. It's not a place or time where I think deep thoughts - just a time to look intensely at the stones, making quick selections based upon bright colors and shapes and sizes - as a child might.

After making a pile of stones, I begin arranging them, gradually adding and subtracting stones until the composition pleases my inner eye. Only then does the technical photographic work come into play; when I have to apply my knowledge of light and composition.

So, what does a photograph like this mean? Nothing could be simpler than a pile of stones, so I'll let you draw your own conclusions about deeper truths. As for me, the surface beauty is quite enough.
