As I write this in the summer of 2003, I am in a transition period. My days in the traditional color darkroom are just about over because Fuji has discontinued making the Fujichrome (Type R) photo paper that I have used for ten years. They have also discontinued making internegative film, so I can no longer make Type C prints from my color transparencies. I am now creating my new prints from digital scans of my original transparencies. Some of these prints are Type C Chromira prints exposed onto traditional Fuji Crystal Archive photographic paper via light-emitting diode technology; others are printed with an inkjet printer onto archival paper. Both types of prints look great. I still print my black-&-white photographs in a traditional darkroom onto Ilford RC paper, though this may also change. I continue to make my prints to a high standard. Whatever new processes I adopt will continue to be extremely long-lasting. Mounting, matting, and framing I mount the photographic prints on a 4-ply museum-quality acid-free board. White mats are made from the same material, which gives a contemporary white-on-white appearance. Double mats look great on many photographs; for these I normally use a very light misty gray outer mat. I then pick an inner mat that works well with the photograph. For picture frame information, please refer to the "Ordering this Photo" chart on the pages showing individual photographs. For glass on photographs larger than the matted 11 x 14" size, I use Tru-Vue AR glass that eliminates over 90% of reflections, but is crystal clear, so the brilliant colors of the photograph shine through. This glass has an anti-glare optical coating similar to what is used on the finest camera lenses to reduce flare. This glass also cuts out more UV light than regular glass. If you want to substitute regular picture framing glass or traditional non-glare glass, you can deduct 10% from the framed price. If the photograph will be exposed to continuous fluorescent light or to high levels of direct or indirect sunlight, I recommend using Tru Vue Museum Glass, which cuts 97% of UV light. Add 15% to the cost of the framed photograph for this glass. If you have any questions about glass, please contact us at lee@leerentz.com. Shipping matted and framed work requires careful packing with such materials as bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard, and foam core board. Normally I ship via FedEx Ground or FedEx Home Delivery. The costs listed below apply only to shipment to continental USA destinations; please call for rates outside of the continental United States. |
