Arctic Spirit 2

One March in the mid-1990's, we had a special opportunity. Snowy owls had invaded Washington in impressive numbers; we heard about a concentration of nearly 30 snowies in a small, undeveloped state preserve on the coast. I photographed there for three days, taking about 500 photographs at close range. The owls mostly ignored me while they rested, but if I walked within their perceived danger zone, they would fly off and land several hundred yards away. These ghostly predators are always thrilling to see, and I feel privileged to have spent so much time with them.
