GOBBLER'S KNOB LOOKOUT
Being stationed at this lookout, dramatically overlooking Mount Rainier, would have been a dream job for this introverted photographer. Alas, all I can do is hike to the lookout and dream.
I hiked here for the sunset colors reflecting off The Mountain, and had to return two miles to camp by the light from my headlamp. What was really spooky on that night hike was seeing the eyeshine from a large creature on the dark trail. It turned out to be a dog, accompanied by a young woman who planned to camp beneath the lookout structure. Which wasn’t proper according to National Park Service rules, but it sure would have been beautiful!
