STILL WATERS
While I was traveling around the Olympic Peninsula during the winter, news came on the radio that a fierce storm was expected by midnight. At twilight the air was still; as I followed the shore of Lake Crescent, clouds were quietly massing above the mountains.
The lake was dead calm–unusual for a deep lake that normally generates a strong chop. When I reached this dock, the scene cried out for a photograph. I love the composition of the diagonal lines formed by the dock and the distant mountains–plus the feeling of absolute silence created by the calm before the storm. It is a photograph that invites repeated contemplation.
