RAVEN STARE
On a cliff rising high above the Pacific Ocean, this Common Raven stared back at me, unconcerned, as I created this portrait. Unlike many birds, ravens are often calm around humans and other large mammals, such as bears. They have learned to associate us with food, and rarely consider us a threat.
I have observed ravens in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, the Olympics and Cascades of Washington, an island off Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, and the rugged coast of California. Unlike crows, which go slumming in cities, ravens are birds of truly wild and interesting places.
