WINTER ON FOGO ISLAND, NEWFOUNDLAND

Fogo Island has become a legendary place for the jet set to helicopter in to the Fogo Island Inn, which is a contemporary hotel towering above the modest homes and fishing stages of this historic fishing village. Rooms there start at about $2,000 per night, and the perfectly prepared cuisine sourced from local ingredients is purportedly to die for. But I’m cheap and poor, so I stayed in a $50 AirBnB instead.

I found that Fogo Island was a wonderful microcosm of this province, which was historically reliant on cod fishing. In this photograph, an old wooden boat has been retired after a career of setting out to sea in all sorts of weather, and in which fishermen hauled in lines and nets with the cod harvest. The small red buildings, known as stages, were where fishermen kept their gear and cleaned their catches, mostly in the old days.
