SPIRIT PLACE
Mount Baker is a dramatic stratovolcano near the Canadian border, and is an icon from parts of Puget Sound and Canada. Snow-capped and gouged by vast glaciers, it is my favorite of the five Cascade volcanoes on Washington State, where trails lead to glaciers on several faces of the mountain. This was the view from our backpacking campsite at Excelsior Pass, with unsettled weather and dramatic clouds. In the photograph you can see blue crevasses and watermelon snow, and the dramatic views of raw nature that make the Pacific Northwest such a special place to live.
