At the time of this writing, I live on a small lake on the Olympic Peninsula, and have seen Wood Ducks here for years. About ten years ago, I set up a pair of Wood Duck nest boxes, and they have been occupied by the ducks for every one of those years. Twice, I have been able to see all the baby Wood Ducks leap from a nest box to the lake below (it only takes a couple of minutes for a dozen or more babies to leave the box after the mother calls them from below).
Several years ago, I decided to take advantage of the presence of the Wood Ducks and set up a blind on the lake. That’s when I took this photograph. What I especially like about it is that I am photographing from the level of the duck, rather than the normal level of a standing human, so it lends a more intimate feeling to the picture.
