It was nearing twilight on the Skagit Flats, a place where owls and hawks spend the winter hunting the open agricultural land. We spotted this owl in a small tree, where it looked around continuously while searching for mouse-like voles that are a mainstay of its diet. I took a lot of photographs, but I especially liked this one, when it took off and flew past me in search of prey, flying in its fluttering moth-like fashion. We watched as the owl sailed over the lowlands, and did battle with a rival Northern Harrier (hawk), which goes after the same prey.
