Watching a salmon muscle its way upstream, after swimming hundreds of miles upstream against a strong current and against all odds, is among the highest pleasures of visiting the Pacific Northwest or Alaska. Everyone knows the basic story: the fish are hatched from eggs buried in a stream bed; eventually they make their way to the ocean, where they spend several years as a flash of silver in the depths; then they head upstream, guided by scent and instinct, to their birth stream. There they mate and lay eggs in a valiant effort to secure a future for the species. During this epoch journey they have faced the jaws of sharks and grizzly bears and a score of other species. If only we as humans can accomplish as much in a lifetime.
