Heavy clouds cloaked the landscape at the end of the day. While we prepared our backpacking supper in camp, a huge bird flew in a half-circle around our camp, perhaps 100 feet above our heads and just below the cloud ceiling. Then it landed perhaps 150 feet from us, in the top of a Mountain Hemlock. There it sat as we ate dinner; then the sun suddenly emerged from the clouds and I sprang into action with my camera. Soon after, it lifted off and swooped down on a prey animal in the meadow, and I also took a few pictures of the magnificent bird in flight. What an ending to the day!
