During the spring of 2017, a pod of Killer Whales moved into the reaches of Puget Sound near my home. This pod consisted of transient whales that hunt wherever they can find prey, and are quite different from the resident salmon-eating Orcas of Puget Sound. This was the big male that is part of each pod, although in reality it is a matriarchal society with an older female really in charge of the group.
This male was hunting Harbor Seals and Sea Lions with its group, and remained in this area of Puget Sound for several days, cruising up and down Hammersley Inlet in search of marine mammals. It was an awesome sight!
