Gritty industrial zones have their own muscular beauty. On a cross-country trip following U. S. Route 2 across the top of Wisconsin, I was intrigued by the Lake Superior waterfront of Superior, Wisconsin. This has been a shipping port for Lake Superior for generations, and the brick buildings and concrete grain silos have a historic feeling of times gone by. When I photographed this scene, a locomotive was arranging train cars in the freight yard.
