Song of the Deep South

This is a tale of two tuxedo-clad creatures.

When an operatic tenor tilts back his head and projects his powerful voice across a concert hall, he is often singing a song of unrequited love.

When a Gentoo Penguin tilts back his head and projects his powerful voice across the snowy landscape, he is singing a song of yearning for love.

And no, I'm not making this up. The young male penguin calls loudly at the edge of a colony, advertising that he is unattached, available, and ready to make babies. All he needs is a willing female to be his mate. I photographed this particular penguin on the Antarctic Peninsula; the blue color behind him is the dense ice of a towering glacier.
