A Window on Antarctica

When we arrived at Port Lockroy, a British Antarctic station, I was surprised to see black tarpaper buildings with orange and white windows. Then it struck me - this was a color-coordinated tribute to the Gentoo Penguins that were nesting all around the station! At least I think that was the inspiration (whether intended or not). Martha Stewart would be pleased at the effort, though perhaps not by the garish color combination.

I laughed out loud at the sight, then worked at capturing just the right arrangement of penguins in front of a window (and no, I didn't bait them or herd them into place!)

On a serious note, I often find that unexpected combinations of nature and human artifact create more interesting photographs than either alone.
