The Chiwaukum enigma
by Lee Rentz

She said she had stopped for lunch at an abandoned and broken-down log cabin along the rushing Chiwaukum River. Just after lunch she began hearing a low growling noise in the vicinity, but couldn't locate the source. She thought it came from somewhere in the trees. She said "I've been backpacking since I was four years old, and I've never heard anything like it." She said it totally "creeped her out" and that her dog was nervous and excited. So she decided to leave the area and get back to her companions in camp. We suggested that the growling could have been a cougar attracted to her because of her small dog. Or maybe it was a bear. But of course we couldn't be sure. She did say the dog was enormously relieved to leave the vicinity of the old cabin.

She left us and headed down the trail. We never saw her again and hope she made it out of the wilderness.

A few minutes later we discovered the log cabin along the river. The roof was caved in and a lone, forlorn window stared out toward the rushing river. I didn't like the cabin's location; it was in a dark and desolate grove of spruces--I would have been uneasy living there. We sat down on a log bench in front of the cabin, each of us facing a different direction so that nothing could stealthily approach. After our meal of jerky and crackers, we looked around a bit, then walked up the trail away from the cabin.

Then I heard the same growling sound the woman had described. We listened closely, and both of us repeatedly heard the low growl. What could it be?

That's the end of my story..obviously we made it safely out of the wilderness. Several questions remain unanswered; do you think you know the source of the growl we heard near the cabin? If so, please email us at lee@leerentz.com and let us know--and we'll tell you what we think the growl actually was.

Also please note: all the occurrences in this story happened as described. I did, however, inject more ambiguity into the interpretation of facts than may be called for. Decide for yourself what is and isn't real.

One other strange occurrence on this trip: on our final night out, Karen got into her sleeping bag and relaxed on the ground. Almost immediately, she felt something pushing up from the ground below her; then she felt it again! We traded places in the tent, but I never felt it. I guess she was the chosen one. What do you think it was?

This is also one of those times in the Northwest when people are claiming Sasquatch sightings and finding large tracks in remote places. Is it possible? Who knows ... people seem to need to believe.
