Twilight on King Lake

Every outdoors person has favorite campsites, and this is mine. Specifically, it sits on a White Pine-clad peninsula that extends out into King Lake, a beautiful northern lake studded with islands. I have camped here occasionally over the years, experiencing beautiful sunsets, fierce thunderstorms, misty mornings, and all the other moods that a place can take on. I have photographed a calling loon and a young goshawk here, and have captured the lake in several evocative images.

For this photograph I decided to photograph the lake at deep twilight, which gives the overall scene a deep blue/purple hue. For contrast, I lit up the trunk of the White Pine with my trusty Coleman lantern. I like the contrast, and it gives a feeling of wilderness with an unseen human presence.

Location: King Lake State Forest Campground, Copper Country State Forest, Upper Peninsula, Michigan, USA
