We move through a world of physics—an ephemeral complex of tissue wandering through space and time, guided by networks of impulses lighting up our brains in brilliant clouds of electricity. We are as spirits.

Back to earth. In the wondrous Monterey Bay Aquarium, people stand entranced in the lovely blue light. Tuna and sharks glide by, quicksilver impressions in the cobalt sea. I have always loved nature, but this visit to the aquarium was the first time I’ve ever felt a sense of wonder while observing captive animals. It must have been the combination of the ethereal light and the exotic creatures, for I came away refreshed and thrilled. This photograph is my favorite impression of that experience, and perhaps my best photograph of 2006.
