Resting Place
When I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, my family often drove into the city to visit my grandparents, who lived in a fine old brick house on a street shaded by classic elms. Their 1940s era house predated air conditioning, of course, so they had a wonderful screened-in porch that caught the summer breezes. On that porch were two of these stamped metal chairs, as well as a squeaky chaise lounge that my brothers and I loved to rock back and forth, just to irritate our elders. Times changed: my grandparents left the city and the elms along Greenlawn Street died of Dutch Elm Disease. But my fond memories of that time and place remain. That is why I took this picture of a chair sitting behind a house in Mendocino, California. I would just love to sit in that chair today and feel the cold metal against my legs. Lee Rentz |
