Spring Impressions

I have been a nature photographer for 35 years. In the early years one of my passions was to get the sharpest possible picture through use of the best lenses and finest grain films. Usually I still want my picture to be ultra-sharp, but as my art matures I find myself more and more interested in capturing fleeting impressions of the natural world.

In this photograph, taken at Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, I found Serviceberry (aka Juneberry and Shadbush) blooming at the edge of a wet meadow. With a shallow depth of field, I captured only a few stems and blossoms in focus, using the beautiful soft green of the out-of-focus meadow to celebrate the lushness of spring.
