A compelling photograph is an insight into the soul of planet Earth, with a power to renew the sense of wonder and intensify the thrill of being alive
Early in the winter, before the Great Lakes harbors freeze over, crashing storm waves frequently coat lighthouses with freezing spray. The effect is astounding, especially when one considers that the lighthouse keepers of a bygone era were staffing these beacons during horrendous storms.
The Grand Haven Lighthouse, shown here, is among my favorites. Located on the Michigan shore of Lake Michigan, it sits at the end of a pier leading into the lake, and is constructed so the crashing waves fling themselves into the air just before reaching the structure.
