A compelling photograph is an insight into the soul of planet Earth, with a power to renew the sense of wonder and intensify the thrill of being alive
On a spring visit to Alaska, where my brother and his wife have raised a family, I noticed the warm sunset light glowing on the walls. I picked up a camera and began photographing the shadows and patches of light all over the house. These graceful folds in the curtains were catching the last light of the setting sun, when it is as warm as maple syrup. The valleys of the translucent curtains were letting through the blue light of the landscape beyond, already in shade.
My favorite painter, Edward Hopper, once said "What I wanted to do was to paint the sunlight on the side of a house." In other words, he simply wanted to reveal the world to the rest of us, and that's what I was trying to achieve with this photograph.
