LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE
Island life sometimes evolves to be less afraid of people, perhaps because birds and mammals didn’t face the constant pressure of hunting. On Santa Cruz Island, the Gray Foxes are like that, and so was this Loggerhead Shrike. We were walking down a trail and it popped up in a nearby shrub. I had to get my long lens out of my backpack, which took a couple of minutes, and then I set up my tripod and attached the lens and finally got to take my pictures. Meanwhile, it sat their patiently posing, even though we were just 12 feet away. Sometimes nature gives me a special gift!
