THE CROSSING
The American spirit includes images of Buffalo thundering across the plains in a vast herd, perhaps pursued by Indians on horseback and sending up an immense cloud of dust. But most of the Buffalo were killed off by meat hunters and killers who were hired to deprive the Indians of food.
The only remaining herd of truly wild Bison was restricted to Yellowstone National Park, where their descendants thrive to this day. In the Madison Valley of Yellowstone, a herd crosses the river frequently through the day to get to where the grass is greener. I spent the better part of a spring day trying to get a picture that evoked the wild spirit of these immense creatures, and this was my favorite. I chose to print it with a sepia tone in order to pay homage to the Old West.
