VISITING NEIGHBORS
In Amish communities everyone knows their neighbors and people appear to get along well. Cooperation and harmony are taught in the Amish schools instead of emphasizing individual achievement, which is a whole different mindset from the larger American ideal. Neighbors visit each other frequently, sometimes for just a visit and sometimes to get together for a project. Of course, visiting by buggy is not as simple as going by car, since the horse has to be harnessed and staying warm has to be considered. There is no radio for the soundtrack, just the clopping of a horse’s hooves and the sound of wheels crunching snow.
