SUNDAY SERVICES
Every other Sunday the Amish gather at the home of a member of the community for Christian services. Some arrive on foot, the women dressed in their black woolen capes and bonnets, the men wearing white shirts with black coats and black felt hats with brims. Many arrive by buggy, and it is a joy to see perhaps 20 buggies parked in front of a barn, with the horses sheltered inside the barn. I have heard songs emanating from the house while worshipers gather for a time of joyous thanks on the day when no one works. It is a life apart, and that’s what makes it so wonderful to observe … from a respectful distance.
