SNOWY OWL STARE
Once or twice a decade, Snowy Owls descend from their normal Arctic home to winter in the northern tier of states. I have seen this irruption of owls in three different years along the Washington State coastline, at a special place known as Damon Point State Park. Each time the owls come down, they settle at this park in numbers of perhaps 12-20 individual owls, and there they spend a long winter from November to March. Why they pick this particular spot is unknown, but it is flat and open, like their tundra home, and the supply of ducks and small mammals for food is plentiful.
For this photographer, the opportunity to see and photograph this wonderful owl species is a gift. I hope I’m able to attend the next coming of the owls.
