TWIN PEAKS
While visiting Haida Gwaii, formerly known by the British name of the Queen Charlotte Islands, I was drawn to the fog mingling with the peaks, which spoke to me of a timeless place of beauty. This archipelago has been the home of the Haida people for 10,000 years, who are known in the popular imagination for their exquisite carvings of totem poles. We visited the old villages and saw the remnants of longhouses and totem poles–places that had been abandoned when smallpox and other diseases nearly wiped out these places, killing over 90% of the people. Can you imagine the terror and grief? These islands are now a place of spirits and of a resurgence of native people and their totems.
