FOREST IMPRESSIONS 10: Bearded Hemlocks
While hiking the crest of a long, wooded ridge toward some open meadows in the high country, I noticed that these immense trees each wore a beard of usnea lichen on the rough bark. I moved the camera slightly during the exposure to achieve a more impressionistic look, which I find much more evocative than the straight shots that I also took. The photograph has a mystery to it, and it reminds me of the forests I imagined when reading The Lord of the Rings.
