COLOR AND LINE IN A MOMENT OF GRACE
On the road to a hiking trip in Olympic National Park, I rounded a bend while curving around Lake Crescent; across the lake, against a stormy winter sky, arched one of the most vivid rainbows I have ever seen. Working quickly, I took traditional landscape photographs showing the complete rainbow in its setting. These were good, but the rainbow was hanging around for a long time, so I was able to experiment with a more impressionistic approach. Using a long lens, I focused on the alder branches in the foreground, throwing the rainbow into soft focus behind. This made all the difference between creating a pleasing photo and creating a photo that I am passionate about. Note the water drops clinging to the branches, which provide evidence of the passing storm.
