GREAT BLUE
One early spring morning I looked out the window on thick fog obscuring Fawn Lake. To my surprise, I saw a Great Blue Heron perched on some alder branches in the foreground, looking alert as it rested above the lake. Here it has one scaly leg tucked up into its feathers for warmth; on the visible leg it has its toes curled and locked firmly around a branch. It must be quite a balancing act to stand on one leg for long periods of time, but many species of birds can manage this remarkable feat.
For this photographic print, I chose to use a painterly color scheme for the feathers. It is not a typical field guide photograph, but instead is quite impressionistic.
