THE GRACE OF DAILY LIFE
I live near an Amish community in winter, and get to see their agrarian lifestyle on a nearly daily basis. The seasons on the farms bring maple sugaring, ice harvesting, plowing, planting, and the harvest with all its splendid produce. The children walk to school wearing straw hats and bonnets. Everyone travels to Sunday services in horse-drawn buggies. Each farm has a specialty to raise cash: chair caning, clock repair, making hickory furniture, building hunting blinds, raising chickens for eggs, and so many more.
One thing all the farms have in common is that the laundry is done by hand and set out to dry outdoors, often on clotheslines out in the open, but sometimes under an overhang on the front porch if rain threatens. For this photograph, I chose to remove the color from the background to emphasize the palette of colors in the towels.
