SILVER FOX
Most people are familiar with the Red Fox, which often lives in rural and suburban areas. The fox shown here, which I photographed in early snow on Mount Rainier, is also a Red Fox, but it is a genetic variant called a Silver Fox. To make matters even more complex, this subspecies is an inhabitant of the high mountains and doesn’t even run across foxes of the lowlands. A litter of fox kits of this subspecies can contain both the red and silver-furred variants. When I photographed this Silver Fox, it was listening intently, its ears focused on a point below the snow surface. A moment later, it pounced and came up with a meadow vole. I think its coloration is simply elegant!
