MARINA PATINA
Photography is largely the art of seeing possibilities, and they are everywhere. I was photographing in the marina of Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon. There were pretty boats and barking sea lions everywhere, but it was the details that really caught my attention. Rope shadows, water reflections, portholes, and all the other artistic details of a working waterfront filled with commercial fishing boats.
For this photograph, I noticed these stains, caused by chemical reactions of metals and saltwater, on the hull of an old fishing boat. The color range, from rust to verdigris, forms in a mesmerizing pattern of lines and shapes. It looks kind of like what people call “modern art,” but it is oh-so-real.
